How to Calculate GPA at Anna University (Step by Step)
1 Find Your Grade Points for Each Subject
Anna University uses a 10-point grading scale. Convert your letter grade to grade points:
O (Outstanding) = 10 points (91–100 marks)
A+ (Excellent) = 9 points (81–90 marks)
A (Very Good) = 8 points (71–80 marks)
B+ (Good) = 7 points (61–70 marks)
B (Average) = 6 points (57–60 marks)
C (Satisfactory) = 5 points (50–56 marks)
U (Fail / Arrear) = 0 points (below 50 marks)
2 Multiply Each Subject's Credits × Grade Points
For every subject, multiply the number of credits by the grade points you earned. This gives you weighted grade points for that subject.
Weighted Points = Credits × Grade Points
Example: Web Technology is a 3-credit subject. You scored A+ (9 points).
Weighted Points = 3 × 9 = 27
3 Add Up All Weighted Points and Total Credits
Sum all the weighted points from every subject. Also add up the total credits registered this semester.
4 Divide to Get Your GPA
GPA = Total Weighted Grade Points ÷ Total Credits

How to Calculate CGPA (Overall — All Semesters)
CGPA Formula
CGPA = Σ (Semester GPA × Credits that semester) ÷ Total Credits across all semesters
Example (4 semesters):
Sem 1: GPA 8.00, Credits 24 → 8.00 × 24 = 192
Sem 2: GPA 8.50, Credits 24 → 8.50 × 24 = 204
Sem 3: GPA 9.00, Credits 24 → 9.00 × 24 = 216
Sem 4: GPA 8.75, Credits 24 → 8.75 × 24 = 210
Total Credits = 96 | Sum = 822
CGPA = 822 ÷ 96 = 8.56 → 85.6%

Frequently Asked Questions
How is GPA calculated in Anna University?
GPA = Σ(Credits × Grade Points) ÷ Total Credits. Multiply each subject's credits by its grade points (O=10, A+=9, A=8, B+=7, B=6, C=5, U=0), sum all the products, then divide by total credits registered that semester.
What is the GPA to percentage formula for Anna University?
Anna University officially uses Percentage = GPA × 10. A GPA of 8.5 = 85%, a CGPA of 9.2 = 92%. This formula applies to all regulations — R2021, R2017, and R2013.
Is GPA and CGPA the same in Anna University?
No. GPA is calculated for a single semester. CGPA is the cumulative (running average) across all completed semesters. Your marksheet shows both — the semester GPA at the bottom of each semester and the CGPA running total.
How to calculate GPA if I have arrears (U grade)?
A U grade = 0 grade points. Include it in your calculation with 0 points × credits. This drags your GPA down significantly. If you clear the arrear later, the new grade replaces the U for CGPA calculation going forward, but your previous semester's GPA won't change retroactively.
How many credits are there in each semester (R2021)?
Under R2021, most semesters have 24–26 credits (varies by department). Semester 8 is typically lower (project-heavy). Total credits for a BE/BTech degree is approximately 160–180 over 8 semesters. Check your department's scheme of studies document for exact values.
Can I calculate GPA using percentage marks instead of grades?
Yes — convert your marks to the grade first, then to grade points:
91–100 marks → O → 10 points
81–90 marks → A+ → 9 points
71–80 marks → A → 8 points
61–70 marks → B+ → 7 points
57–60 marks → B → 6 points
50–56 marks → C → 5 points
Below 50 → U → 0 points
Then use the calculator above with those grade points.
