Every subject you study carries credits — and credits quietly control everything: your GPA, your electives, and whether you graduate. Two minutes here saves years of confusion.
What a credit is
A credit reflects the weekly academic load of a course — roughly, lecture/tutorial hours count fully and practical hours count partially. A typical theory course is 3-4 credits; labs are 1.5-2; projects carry larger blocks. Your curriculum lists the exact credit for every course.
Why credits matter more than marks-per-subject
- GPA weighting: GPA = Σ(credit × grade point) ÷ Σ(credits). A 4-credit subject influences your GPA twice as much as a 2-credit one — allocate study time accordingly (see it live in the calculator).
- Graduation: your degree requires earning the total credits your regulation prescribes (typically in the 160s for B.E./B.Tech), distributed across categories — core, electives, humanities, projects.
- Arrears: failing a subject means its credits are not earned (while still dragging your average as zero points) until you clear it.
Credit categories (why you can’t take only fun electives)
Under CBCS, courses belong to buckets — professional core, professional electives, open electives, basic sciences, employability courses like projects and internships.
