Final-year's biggest fork. Neither is universally better โ they optimize different things.
Choose GATE ifโฆ
- You genuinely want research/academia or an IIT/NIT MTech (campus placements there are a real upgrade: โน15โ30 LPA at top institutes)
- PSUs appeal: ISRO, BARC, NTPC, IOCL recruit via GATE โ job security, ~โน15 LPA CTC, low-stress relative to industry
- You can commit 8โ10 months of disciplined prep and afford the year
Choose placements ifโฆ
- You want income now โ 2 years of industry salary + growth vs 2 years of MTech stipend is a large financial gap
- Your target is software engineering: industry experience beats MTech for SDE careers; nobody pays extra for MTech in web/backend roles
- You learn by building, not by exam prep
The honest math
Fresher โน4 LPA growing to โน10โ15 LPA in 3 years (with job switches) โ or beats the MTech route financially, unless the MTech is from a top-10 institute. GATE's real payoff is PSUs and IITs โ a mid-tier MTech mostly delays the same placement process.
The hedge (popular, honest)
Sit for placements, take an offer, prepare GATE alongside the job's first year. Offer in hand, exam without desperation. If GATE hits big, resign; if not, you have 1 YOE. Start placement prep with our TCS NQT guide.
