PPTs & Offer Letters — Bonds, CTC Breakups and Terms to Read

📅 Aug 23, 2026 ⏱ 5 min read

Two documents shape your first job more than the interview: the pre-placement talk (where terms are explained) and the offer letter (where they bind). Freshers who understand these sign confidently; the rest discover surprises at joining. The decoder:

CTC vs what hits your account

CTC (cost to company) bundles everything the employer spends: basic pay, allowances, employer PF contribution, gratuity provisions, insurance premiums, sometimes one-time bonuses and training valuations. In-hand salary = monthly gross minus deductions (your PF share, taxes, professional tax). A ₹4-7 LPA CTC typically lands meaningfully lower per month than CTC÷12 — compute it from the salary annexure’s components, and ask at the PPT if the breakup isn’t shown. Variable pay clauses matter too: “₹X fixed + ₹Y variable” means Y depends on performance/company factors.

Service agreements & bonds

Common in mass recruitment: a commitment to stay a stated period (often 1-2 years) with a stated amount payable if you exit early — framed as training-cost recovery. Read: the duration, the amount, when it activates (usually from joining), and exceptions. It’s a standard industry practice, not a trap — but it’s a real financial commitment; know it before signing, and factor it into any early-switch plans (career-path context).

The other clauses that matter

At the PPT, ask (professionally)

Salary breakup, bond specifics, posting locations, training structure, confirmation criteria — these are legitimate, expected questions. Note answers; they’re your reference when letters arrive. An offer accepted with full understanding starts a career on adult footing — that’s the whole point.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my in-hand salary less than CTC divided by 12?
Because CTC includes employer PF contributions, gratuity, insurance and sometimes one-time components that never appear in monthly pay, while your gross salary further loses your PF share and taxes. Always compute from the salary annexure’s actual components.
Are bonds legal in IT companies?
Service agreements requiring a payment on early exit are standard practice in Indian mass recruitment, framed as training-cost recovery. Read the duration, amount and trigger conditions before signing, and treat it as a real commitment in your planning.
What questions can I ask at a pre-placement talk?
Salary breakup (fixed vs variable), bond terms, posting locations, training and confirmation structure, and joining timelines — all standard, professional questions. The answers become your reference for reading the offer letter accurately.
