Your TNEA rank is decided by a single number: your cutoff out of 200, calculated from your Class 12 board marks. Here is the exact formula and what it means for you. To get your number instantly, use our TNEA cutoff calculator.
The formula
The TNEA engineering cutoff is out of 200:
Cutoff = Mathematics + (Physics ÷ 2) + (Chemistry ÷ 2)
Mathematics is counted at full value (out of 100), while Physics and Chemistry are each halved (out of 50). The maximum possible cutoff is therefore 100 + 50 + 50 = 200.
Worked example
| Subject | Mark | Counted as |
|---|---|---|
| Mathematics | 95 | 95 |
| Physics | 90 | 45 |
| Chemistry | 88 | 44 |
| Cutoff | 184 / 200 |
Why Mathematics matters most
Since Maths is not halved but Physics and Chemistry are, one extra mark in Maths adds a full point to your cutoff, while an extra mark in Physics or Chemistry adds only half a point. If you are borderline, Maths is where marks count double.
Cutoff is not the same as a seat
Your cutoff decides your rank. The actual college and branch you get depend on your rank, your community, and how many higher-ranked students chose the same option. Closing cutoffs differ by college and change every year, so treat any previous-year figure as a rough guide only and confirm live data on tneaonline.org.
